I mīharo Te Wānanga o Te Ao Māhora

Relevant academic, social, and cultural fields of inquiry

Reflections from Wananga: I gained a deeper understanding that relationships, care, and trust are intentionally built in Maori culture. Through the Powhiri – I have learnt and observed that right from the welcome ceremony, Karenga ( call ), whaikorero ( speeches ), followed by the hongi ( pressing noses ), kai ( food ), each stage is structured to create connection, belonging and trust.

Ruku i te po, Ruku i te ao

Act of Ruku – Diving deep into a subject to find its core essence

Te  Pō – The Night/unknown – Represents the realm of potential, the unmanifested, or knowledge that is currently hidden or forgotten.

Te Ao (World/Known): Represents the world of light, clarity, and manifested knowledge, bringing what was discovered in “the night” into “light” of day

He pūwhakaaro, he pūpeka, ara he pūrākau

He pūwhakaaro (Seed or source of thought) – You initial spark why behind your source.

He Pūpeka (Branching out) – As you dive into your thoughts, they begin to branch and give you ideas. Methodology, Literature, data collection

He Pūrākau (Narrative/deliberate story) – Final story of your thesis. Pūrākau isn’t just a “myth”. It is a codified way of capturing truth and making research coherent.

Sione discussed Tauhi vā, the Tongan principle emphasising relational space, and highlighted the significance of indigenous research methodologies rooted in lived experiences and cultural relationships.
